ODPEM AND DIGICEL LAUNCH DISASTER PREPAREDNESS MONTH


Kingston, Jamaica – April 30, 2009: For the second consecutive year, mobile operator Digicel will be partnering with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), to host a series of events aimed at reducing the risks associated with the upcoming hurricane season. The announcement was made at ODPEM’s launch of Hurricane Preparedness month, April 30 at Knutsford Court Hotel.

Speaking at the launch, Digicel Jamaica CEO Mark Linehan commended ODPEM for its early action in introducing the Hurricane Preparedness Month this year. “Digicel is pleased to be again partnering with ODPEM in preparing Jamaica for the upcoming hurricane season, and look forward to supporting Hurricane Preparedness Month”.

Digicel and ODPEM will host a Hurricane Seminar on Friday May 8 at the Courtleigh Auditorium, followed by road shows in St Thomas, St James, Clarendon and St Catherine on May 30; June 13; June 20 and June 27 respectively. The seminar will bring together primary response agencies as well as heads of the Regional Health Authorities, community leaders and other social development entities and will target residents of areas that are traditionally prone to flooding. Institutions such as children’s homes and homes for the elderly, which are vulnerable to natural disasters, will also be involved in the Seminar.
